Planting the Seeds for a Bountiful Beet Box Season

Planting the Seeds for a Bountiful Beet Box Season

The Goshen Market Foundation started planting early this Spring to make sure the Beet Box would be chock full of veggie goodness when it comes to a stop near you on June 8!

Goshen Market Manager and founding Foundation board member Candice Watson and her son Wyatt have been busy filling their own garden with heirloom tomatoes, tomatillos, and the hardiest of greens to help ensure there will be enough to supply our customers in this time of scarcity. Candice is using sustainable methods like rain catchments and companion planting and avoiding all chemical pesticides.

The Beet Box is still finalizing some of its planned stops for the year and planning expanded services, so expect more announcements soon.

Because food access has become an even more pressing issue during the pandemic, the Beet Box will be moving to a pay-what-you-can model in the hopes that some customers will donate to support the initiative.

The Beet Box will have new social distancing measures in place. This year, produce will remain on the truck and customers will order from a menu rather than handling produce at a front table, for instance.

We are very much looking forward to serving all of our loyal Beet Box customers!

A Celebration of Food, Film, and Local Farms

A Celebration of Food, Film, and Local Farms

Wildey Theater

Downtown Edwardsville

Join the Goshen Market Foundation and the Confluence Climate Collaborative for an evening celebrating our region’s local farms.

The night will open with a cash bar and a complimentary selection of light appetizers sourced from local ingredients by Edwardsville’s best chefs.

The night’s feature event will be a screening of the Documentary “Biggest Little Farm” directed by Emmy award winner John Chester. “The Biggest Little Farm” follows a couple and their dog as they try to bring harmony to the land. New York Times reviewer Glenn Kenny wrote “it may revive your wonder at the weird but ultimately awe-inspiring ways in which humans can help nature do its work”.

Following the screening, Cleveland Heath’s new executive chef Alex Henry will lead a panel discussion with local farmers David Ernst of Ernst Family Farms, Michael Turley of Rolling Lawns Farm, and Bobby and Mindy Wolff of Rustic Roots.

Proceeds will benefit the Confluence Climate Collaborative and Goshen Market Foundation’s Diversity in Farming Seed Grants program, which support new farmers in the Metro East.

Appetizers provided by Cleveland Heath, Burgers STL, 222 Artisan Bakery, Queen’s Cuisine, Elsa Zeller, and Toni Oplt.

Market Sprouts Partners with The Edwardsville Children’s Museum

Market Sprouts Partners with The Edwardsville Children’s Museum

The Goshen Market Foundation’s longstanding Market Sprouts program teaches our youngest market goers about specialty crops and agriculture by hosting activities in the Market Sprouts Garden each Saturday . Meanwhile, Edwardsville Children’s Museum, has been delighting the city’s littlest citizens with its artfully crafted exhibits about Edwardsville’s community since 2003. This year the Children’s Museum launched their discovery garden, an outdoor exploration place with a green house, gardens, and so many new ways to play!

Dr. Abby Schwent, Director of the Children’s Museum, has been collaborating all spring with Candice Watson, our Market Sprouts coordinator, and Farmer Joe, our official Market Sprouts Farmer, to make the new discovery garden an extension of the Foundation’s programs. Candice explains, “I want the visitors at both sites to take ownership of the gardens and find pride in harvesting food for everyone.”

Through out the year, Market Sprouts will host seed planting events and gardening education about sustainable practices, chemical-free growing methods, composting, and rain catching.

Even more exciting, visitors to the Children’s Museum will play an integral part in helping us grow a healthy local food community. Fresh produce harvested at the discovery garden will supply the Beet Box, the Foundation’s Market on Wheels that brings fresh, affordable produce to sites throughout Madison County.  Visit us for Downtown Saturday mornings at the Market or during the week at the Children’s Museum to learn more!

Welcome to the Goshen Market Foundation!

Welcome to the Goshen Market Foundation!

For over twenty years the Land of Goshen Community Market in Edwardsville, IL has provided local produce, crafts, music, and a vibrant sight of downtown activity on Saturday mornings. In 2016, the Market decided to strengthen its commitment to the local community by creating a 501(c)(3) tax exempt foundation with the mission of supporting a healthy local food community. The Goshen Market Foundation plans to use its resources to provide greater access to healthy food, encourage the growth of local agriculture, and educate children and the community about sustainable farming practices and nutrition.
